south african ratel 90 with aml-90 turret collectors models gaso.line / solido finding its roots in 1968, this locally designed armoured fighting vehicle has been produced and supplied since 1976. to reflect the qualities of the vehicle it has been dubbed ratel , which is a particularly tough endemic south-african honey-badger. many variants of this 18.5 tons 6 wd armoured vehicle have been built with different armament arrangements (canons of various calibre, mortars, anti-tank missiles…). up to 6 or 8 -depending on type- troops fully geared board this afv. the 6-cylinders and 12 litres turbo-charged diesel engine yields 280 hp. the ratel can reach a road top-speed of 105 km/h and 30 km/h if off-road. the combat radius is 500 km with topped-off tanks i.e. 430 litres of fuel. the main weapon of the ratel 90 , a french 90 mm with 60 shells, is manned by the gunner and vehicle commander. three 7.62 mm multi-purpose machine-guns are each supplied with 1,200 cartridges and make up the secondary armament. the south-african defence force put the ratel 90 on the fire line whilst fighting local conflicts against namibia for instance. south african ratel 90 with aml-90 turret collectors models gaso.line / solido south african ratel 90 aml-90 gaso.line solido
